Newborns

Congratulations on your newborn!  Here at Georgia Families we want you and your baby to remain happy and healthy.  This is why it is important for you to join a health plan that is right for you both.

Some health plans offer extra benefits for new moms!  Some of them are:

  • Special programs like community baby showers
  • Reward cards and incentive programs
  • Discounts for vitamins
  • Baby items like free strollers
  • Breast pumps for nursing

Don’t forget to check to your comparison charts for a complete list of extras services offered by each health plan!

Also, did you know that when your baby is born, the child will automatically be enrolled into your (the baby’s mother’s) health plan starting on the baby’s date of birth?

You will then have 90 days from the baby’s date of birth to make a one-time change if you choose to.  But on the 91st day, if no changes are made, your child will stay in that health plan until the next year.

If you have more questions about this, please call our call center and speak with one of our counselors!  You can also find more information on Facebook and Twitter.

I was wondering if Georgia Medicaid/Amerigroup Community Care paid for breast pumps. Thanks.

When my baby is born he is to be automatically enrolled into my health plan starting on the date of birth. How does this happen when you all do not know when the baby will be born (due date, etc.). Should I contact the health care company to inform them of my baby’s arrival?

No, you will not need to contact your health plan at the time of the baby’s birth. Instead, you will complete a Medicaid application in the hospital as soon as your child is born. Once Medicaid processes this application and deems your child eligible, they will send us your newborn’s information. Once we receive your child’s information in our system, the child will then be automatically placed into your current health plan.

You will then have 90-days from the child’s date of birth to transfer health plans, one time, if you choose to.

If you have any additional questions or concerns about this process, please contact the Georgia Families Enrollment Center at 1-888-GA-ENROLL (1-888-423-6765) or visit our website again at http://www.georgia-families.com.

My baby is 3 days old, and they did not give me a Medicaid application at the hospital. What do I need to do? How can I get her Medicaid?

Thank you for your blog comment.

Since you did not complete an application at the hospital, you may complete one on the state’s COMPASS website. This site allows members to:
       Apply for Public Assistance
 Get Community Partner Resources to assist with the application process
 See the status of your application
       View benefits information
       Report a change
 Renew benefits (complete the case review process)

The website address for COMPASS is http://www.compass.ga.gov. If you do not have internet access, you can call the Online Services Hotline at 1-877-423-4746.

      Thank you again!

Are babies who need NICU care enrolled in Medicaid?

      Chris,

Unfortunately, newborns are not automatically placed in Medicaid. The child’s mother would need to apply for Medicaid. She can visit the state’s website to complete an application for coverage. The website address is If you do not have internet access, you can call the Online Services Hotline at 1-877-423-4746.

      Thank you.
