After Joining a Health Plan

Person filling out a form. When you join Georgia Families, you will be signed up for a health plan. Remember, a health plan is a group of doctors, nurses, hospitals and others that work together to give health services to members.

So thereafter, the health plan will send you a welcome packet. Open it right away! It is full of important information about your health benefits.

Your membership card will be in the health plan welcome packet. Take it with you when you go to any doctor’s office, clinic or hospital. It’s a good idea to keep it in a special place where you can always find it easily, like in a wallet or purse.

You will also find a list of PCPs (primary care providers) in the welcome packet. Remember, a Primary Care Provider is the person you go to for regular checkups and other basic services. Over time, your PCP will get to know you and your health care needs. Your PCP will also send you to specialists and other providers if you need more specialized health care.

If you have any questions, call our call center.  You can also find answers on our Facebook page and Twitter feed.

Did this help you to understand “coverage”? Let us know! Send us an email at blog@georgia-families.com. Please know that email is not private. Messages you send can be copied or read by others. I have no idea which plan I should choose. How I can decide which one is the best for me and my daughter?
    Thanks!

The Choosing a Health Plan brochure doesn’t provide information about what the plans offer, only the extras. I am still not clear, what “coverage” includes. Does it cover my child’s dental and eye benefits? What are the limits/terms of that coverage. The chart you all provide also specifies that the plans offer all these great “extras” for members over 21 years of age, which would be great for me if I was actually approved for coverage, but since only my child was, how do I determine what each of the plans in my area actually offer (specifically) in order to make an informed choice on the plan that is best for them?
    Thanks.

Great question! Each of the health plans offer the same basic services as Medicaid and PeachCare for Kids. Here is a link to the Department of Community Health’s website that details these basic services.

If you have any additional questions, or concerns related to selecting a health plan, feel free to contact the Georgia Families Enrollment Center at 1-888-GA-ENROLL (1-888-423-6765), Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., (TDD: 1-877-889-4424). We would be glad to walk you through the process.

I’m currently 18 years old. I believe my coverage runs out when I turn 19. How do I enroll in one of the plans? All of the plan comparison charts talk about benefits if someone is 21 years of age or older. I don’t want to be stuck in insurance limbo until I turn 21. What can I do to fix this?

To be a member of Georgia Families and select a health plan, you must have active Medicaid or PeachCare for Kids. Once you are no longer eligible for PeachCare for Kids, you should try to apply for Medicaid coverage to continue to be in a health plan.

In order to apply for Medicaid coverage, you will need to contact your county Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) office. You can locate your local DFCS office number by visiting http://dfcs.dhr.georgia.gov (Click on “County Offices” from the list on the left. When the map appears, click on the region where your county exists).

If you deemed eligible for Medicaid, you may receive all of the basic services until you turn 21 years of age. Thereafter, you should use the comparison charts to select a health plan that will offer you the types of services you need most.

If you have any additional questions or concerns, please contact the Georgia Families Enrollment Center at 1-888-GA-ENROLL (1-888-423-6765) or visit our website again at http://www.georgia-families.com.

I am confused. I have never been on Medicaid so I am very unfamiliar with how this all works.
Thank you for your time in responding.

I’m just curious as to if someone can receive these benefits based on their income. I just thought Medicaid was the only thing offered, but rarely approved, for an adult with medical issues unless you become disabled and receive Medicare benefits. If I understand correctly, this may cover pap smears and contraception. However, I read to qualify for Georgia Families you have to be on Medicaid or PeachCare for Kids? I am very confused about it all.

        1. GA Moderator

Yes, to become a member of Georgia Families you must be eligible for Medicaid or PeachCare for Kids.

In order to get more information regarding eligibility for Medicaid coverage, you will need to contact your county Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) office. You can locate your local DFCS office by visiting http://dfcs.dhr.georgia.gov (Click on “County Offices” from the list on the left. When the map appears, click on the region where your county exists).

DFCS is better suited to provide you with the information you need concerning Medicaid coverage and they should be able to answer any questions you may have.

Thank you for your blog comment.

Georgia Families is a health care program just for Medicaid and PeachCare for Kids members. Through Georgia Families, members can choose a Health Plan and a Primary Care Provider (PCP) to provide their health care services.

Once you are deemed eligible for Medicaid, you will be sent a Georgia Families enrollment packet. You may then enroll with Georgia Families in one of four (4) ways:

        1. On the Georgia Families website
        2. By phone at 1-888-GA-ENROLL (1-888-423-6765)
        3. On paper, using a form you get in the mail from Georgia Families
        4. In person, with a Georgia Families enrollment counselor

You will have at least 30 days to enroll in Georgia Families and choose a Health Plan and PCP. However, if you do not choose within 30 days, a Health Plan and PCP will be chosen for you.

After you enroll with a health plan, you should receive a health plan packet along with a new health plan card, one week after your effective date.

I hope this information helps! Please feel free to check out our website and other blog posts at http://www.georgia-familes.com if you have additional questions.

Okay, I have Medicaid and I received the Georgia Families packet in the mail. Right now viewing the papers, I really need advice and help on choosing the best health plan for myself and my future child. I have read and reviewed the comparison chart but I’m not so sure which is best. I’m kind of confused and really need help making the right choice.

I just enrolled in the WellCare group/plan to start on October 1, 2014. Are my family and I still covered with the straight Medicaid cards until then? My kids have a well check at the pediatrician today and I am freaking out.

    1. GA Moderator

Yes, that is exactly how it works. After October 1, 2014 you can take your children to the PCP that will be listed on your WellCare Health Plan card.
